✧ In one or two sentences, describe the main themes present in your game.
Chupi is a top-down, 2D, pixel-art game in the style of the RPG Maker horror genre about the Latin American myth of the chupacabra. Unearth the mysteries of the cryptid as a university student attempting to write their research paper in one night at the library after-hours; find the information you need without getting your blood sucked in the process.
✧ What was the inspiration of the game? What made your team decide to make this game specifically?
As the video game industry diversifies, there is a larger and larger demand for new and different types of stories. Being a Puerto Rican game developer, I want to make games about the Latinx experience for Latinx game-players and for those who wish to learn, enjoy, and share culture.
In February, my game received Best Narrative at the City College of New York’s Unreleased Games Arcade! The judges, high school students, told me they were happy to see authentic Caribbean representation in a video game. Just after Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl performance, Puerto Rico is having its cultural moment. I hope to continue that moment and make it a movement.
✧ What were some of your most memorable moments from making this game? What did you learn from those moments?
I made the interesting decision to learn an entirely new engine from scratch starting in September. This was a challenge, but a pretty fun one. Additionally, although I did do much of the work on my own as a solo developer, throughout the course of this project, I've learned that no game is ever truly made by just one person. I could not have gotten as far as I have without tremendous support from my friends and classmates.
