Interview:

✧ In one or two sentences, describe the main themes present in your game.

Hexoclast is about discovering and building a new magical society. The chaos and tribulations that come with building a society when everyone is vying for more control over the vision.

✧ What was the inspiration of the game? What made your team decide to make this game specifically?

It was inspired by our love for really crunchy board games and sparked by our producer's fascination with the question: How do magical societies in fiction start and why do we never get to read about the founding of these "ancient magical societies"? It really evolved from there.

✧ What were some of your most memorable moments from making this game? What did you learn from those moments?

Playtesting was really enjoyable especially early on when we were considering role play and a voting mechanic for the magic. We have videos of people attempting handstands for game resources and heated negotiations for spell success votes. While all of this was fun it really bloated the duration for our game sessions. So we cut those mechanics in favor of something more guided and streamlined, much to the chagrin of some of our frequent testers. In essence we learned that it is okay to rework mechanics that are favored by play testers if it would lead to a better overall game experience.

✧ Talk about your teammates! What was everyone's role?

Ray is our Systems Designer and Manufacturer, they were always on the frontline to fight with the Maker's Space week after week to get our materials recut and printed.
Alesha is our Producer, the narrative impetus for our game, and the Art Lead.
Sydney is our main Narrative Designer, the icon designer for the UI, and always willing to jump into any other area when necessary.
Luis is our magic Systems Designer, and general Game Designer, helping with core systems of the game along with making/iterating on the spellcasting mechanics of the game.
Ruari is our part time Game Designer she graciously split her time between us and TWO other capstone games to lend us a hand with play testing and systems tweaking whenever we needed.
Amber is our part time 2D Artist, she dedicated her time with us to making incredible portraits for guardians while still working with her other capstone project.
